The first stop on our great adventure after a long day of flying was Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. I’ve heard a whole lot about Vancouver and watched different TV specials about the city in 2010 when they hosted the Winter Olympics. It is a beautiful city! Full of energy and vibrant people with all sorts of outdoor activities and beautiful places. The city is a melting pot of nationalities, but according to our cab driver, over 50% of the residents are of Asian descent. There are also homeless people all over town sleeping on sidewalks in the middle of the day and begging on street corners. We took a bus tour of downtown and were impressed by the beautiful gardens–the rain forest climate makes the flowers very lush and beautiful. The tour driver spoke at length about the environmental savvy residents and the city’s focus on being an inclusive community to people of various cultures and lifestyles. It was a sure a stark contrast to the man in a sleeping bag I had to step around to get into the 7-11 to purchase a few items. No one seemed to notice these folks living in the street.
The other thing we did in Vancouver was Flyover Canada. It was just an amazing show. If you have ever been on Soarin’ at Epcot, this was a very similar experience. If you ever have the chance to experience either of them–do it! It’s probably as close to experience the flight of a bird first hand as I will ever have!
We were fortunate enough to be in Vancouver on Canada Day and I believe at least half of the people in the region were down near the pier when we got under way. It was quite the celebration!
